In accordance with the Fair Debt Collection
Practices Act, a debt collector is prohibited from
the following in connection with collecting a debt:
-
harassment
-
verbal abuse
-
threats
-
publicizing a debt
-
identity misrepresentation
These are just a few of the debt collection
tactics prohibited by the FDCPA. The only reason debt collectors
are so often able to get away with these practices is because
so many consumers don't know their own rights.
Debt collectors only have power to "bully" you if you let
them -- that is, if you don't have enough information to
stop them.
Being informed of your rights under the
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act will give you
back control of your situation when a debt collector
harasses you unlawfully. Knowing what they can and can't
do will render their illegal tactics useless, and most
likely save you a lot of unnecessary stress and worry.
Debt Collectors do NOT have all the power.
Remember, you have rights to protect you
from this kind of abusive behavior.
If you're in debt, you owe it to yourself
to learn your rights under the FDCPA. Most likely you have
more rights than you thought you had.
